Lauren Cope

Lauren Cope University: University of East Anglia (manually entered) Wants to be a: writer Interested in: Features, Advice, About: Being an assistant editor on the Features section for the National Student would (as well as being the ultimate procrastination from my degree) be an incredible opportunity for my career. I'm a second year law student studying at the University of East Anglia, but when I graduate I plan to pursue a career in journalism, the only thing I've ever wanted to do. Since coming to University I have become a regular writer for UEA newspaper Concrete, writing for the Features, Lifestyle, Culture and Travel sections. I hope to expand this range and experience other areas of the newspaper, possibly running for Features Editor this summer. I was given the chance to interview number one star Tinchy Stryder, which was an exhilarating, albeit terrifying, experience. I would love to do something similar again as I loved the face to face interaction. Although I intend to increase the amount of articles I upload, I have written many articles for The National Student. I have loved the opportunity and found it not only a great way to expand my portfolio, but a brilliant way to get the things I'm passionate about and interested in published. You kindly offered me work experience which I am looking forward to, especially the challenge and the responsibility. I am also helping out with a new tabloid my university is starting up called ‘The Drop’ and am contributing to ‘Norwich Magazine’. I’m determined to expand my portfolio as much as possible. As secretary on my law society, I single-handedly edited and created a magazine on InDesign software to come out once a semester called ‘De Jure’. It includes on goings in the Society as well as debate and articles concerning the wider world of law. Last month I was elected for the position of Magazine Assistant which involves running De Jure for the upcoming academic year. Amongst other factors, I believe I should get the role because I am a great writer, passionate about what I want to do and would take a great deal of responsibility in the position. I would keep the section topical, fun and packed with a wide variety of articles. When creating De Jure, I loved my first glimpse of an editorial role and would love to get the chance to fill it again. Similar to many students, I am involved with social media and have a strong following on Twitter. I would be more than happy to share and promote The National Student articles and spread the word on campus. I had not heard of The National Student before I chose to do some research, suggesting that on UEA's campus at least, there needs to be more word about the magazine. I would be more than happy to promote. I appreciate you must be overwhelmed with applicants for the editorial positions, but I would love the opportunity to show I am a strong candidate and would make a great assistant editor for the Features section.
