The past few years has seen a dramatic rise in the interest and love for vampires. Since Twilight first hit the cinema screen in 2008 and TV shows such as True Blood, Being Human and The Vampire Diaries followed the want for anything vampiric has never been higher.
That is why the University of Northampton is holding TV Fangdom: A Conference on Television Vampires between the 7th and 8th of June. The event will feature keynote speakers, from seven countries on 11 panels, discussing how vampires have been portrayed across the different genres and the audience in which these TV shows and movies attract.
This conference has been arranged by Dr Lorna Jowett and Dr Michael Starr who are both lectures at Northampton.
Dr Jowett spoke of her excitement about the event: “I'm looking forward to sampling the wide range of topics we have on the programme: a fascinating diversity of papers will examine all aspects of vampires and television from handicrafting to fandom, from kid's TV to parodies of the vampire, from musical themes to costuming."
Dr Jowett also explained how this can help the university: "The TV Fangdom conference aims to put the university on the map as a location where exciting media research is happening, to encourage research in all areas of television studies. We want to demonstrate to our own students, at all levels, that we have a dynamic research community and environment."
Other topics that will be discussed between the two days include sexuality, parody, Americanisation, Vampires and Humanity and Televisuality & Sympathetic vampire which will all be discussed by authors that include Marcus Recht and Catherine Spooner among others.
The TV Fangdon: A Conference on Television will be at the Avenue Campus at Northampton University and if you're looking to go, book your spot here.
