Santa sacked after telling child he doesn't exist

A garden centre Father Christmas has been fired after telling three children about the Sandy Hook massacre and revealing to the eldest that he wasn't real.

The Kennett family visited their local garden centre in Oxford so that their three children, aged ten, seven and six, could see Santa. But after the trio assured him that they had been good boys and girls, Santa told them “There are bad people in the world and bad things happen, like what happened to those children in America.” Assuming he was talking about Sandy Hook, their father interrupted.

Santa then asked the two younger children to go so he could ‘have a word’ with their 10-year-old brother. He whispered something to the boy, who ran out crying. “Santa told me he is not real, it’s just you and dad,” the child said to his mother while his two younger sisters were in hearing distance.

The parents quickly told the manager, and the Santa was fired at the end of the day. Management also apologised and refunded the family, before giving them tickets to Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland.

“Notcutts [the gardening centre in question] certainly feels this was an error of judgment on behalf of the individual,” said Mr Hawker, a spokesperson for the garden centre.

“He has worked for us for 10 years without any complaint and we will be sitting down with him in the future to discuss the incident,” he added.
