Abnormality causes alarmingly large tongue

A 34-year-old man from China has been stuck with an open mouth for 21 years because of his gigantic tongue.

Wang Youping's tongueWang Youping’s mouth piece measures a staggering 25cm long, 10cm wide and 7cm thick! This enormous muscle has even forced his teeth to be squeezed horizontally, causing severe deformity.

From the age of six his tongue and face began to swell, by the time he was 13, Mr Youping was unable to close his mouth properly.

This abnormality has caused a high risk that the vessels in his tongue could rupture and lead to a fatal haemorrhage.

Hospitals have said his condition was too complex to treat, but thanks to a series of tests at 4th military hospital, he is set to go under the knife with the hospital planning to take three years to perform five different surgeries.
