An American publishing company have produced the children’s colouring book; 'We shall never forget 9/11: The kids' book of freedom'.
The book has been designed to educate children about the historical events of 9/11 and claims to help children make sense of the ongoing media coverage of the terrorist attacks. The pictures are accompanied with paragraphs of text outlining the story.
The Missouri based publishing company ‘The Really Big Colouring Books’ said the book is;
‘Designed to be a tool that parents can use to teach children about the facts surrounding 9/11.’
They state that;
‘The book was created with honesty, integrity, reverence, respect and does not shy away from the truth. In this book you will see what happens to a terrorist who orders others to bomb our peace loving wonderful nation.’
The book has been given a rating guide of PG- Parental Guidance Suggested, which is the first time the publisher has issued a rating guide.
One page features a picture of a soldier pointing a gun at a couple in their bedroom wearing traditional Muslim dress, waiting to be coloured in, with the text;
“Being the elusive character that he was, and after hiding out with his terrorist buddies in Pakistan and Afghanistan, American soldiers finally locate the terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden. Many people had helped secure his safety for 10 years.”
Opinions have been divided on the appropriateness of the book. The council on American-Islamic Relations say the book demonises all Muslims as terrorists and extremists.
Publisher Wayne Bell disagreed that the book portrays Muslims in a negative light. He told American television "This is about 19 terrorist hijackers that came over here under the leadership of a devil worshipper, Osama bin Laden, to murder our people. This is history. It is absolutely factual."
