In a scene reminiscent of axed television drama Flashforward, a small US town was shocked when 5,000 dead birds rained from the sky.

The strange event happened just one day after 100,000 fish were found washed up on the banks of a nearby river.

The roads, rooftops and gardens of the residents of Beebe, Arkansas were covered in the dead red-winged blackbirds. Karen Rowe of the state’s game and fish commission said the birds showed signs of ‘physical trauma.

Rowes theory is that the creatures could have been hit by ‘lightning or high-altitude hail’ during heavy storms in the region on New Year’s Day.

The dead drum fish were discovered along the Arkansas river in Ozark, about 125 miles west of Bebe.

Test are being carried out on the dead birds and some of the surviving fish to determine a cause of death.
