A suicide jumper in New York had his fall from an apartment block softened by piles of rubbish left uncollected because of the recent snow.

Vangelis Kapatos survived the 100ft fall from his ninth floor apartment after landing on the bin bags collected underneath.

He is now in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

A police spokesman said: "He landed on a garbage pile - that's the only reason he's alive."
