It’s official: You’re more likely to be bitten by Luis Suarez than a shark.
That’s if you believe the calculations made by the New Statesman, which reports that your chances of being bitten by a shark are 1 in 3,700,000, compared with the frankly terrifying 1 in 2,000 chance of Luis “honest guv, his shoulder just happened to bang into my teeth” Suarez chomping down on you.
Admittedly, the New Statesman calculations are slightly biased, focusing only on the number of times Suarez has played football.
His 441 career appearances multiplied by 14 (the maximum number of opponents he could potentially bite) means that 6,160 players have potentially put their lives at risk taking the field against Suarez. Divide that by his three bites, and opponents have roughly a one in 2,000 chance of become a Suarez snack.
Other things that are less likely to happen to you than being bitten by Suarez include:

- Dying from a hornet, bee or wasp attack (one in 75,852)
- Being struck by lightning (one in 10,000)
- Being killed in a road accident (one in 8,000)
