After hours of thought, and discussion, our judges have chosen our five finalists for the first Student Travel Writer competition.

Here are this year’s lucky finalists, and what our judges said about them:

Sadie Hale - Finding faith in an ancient Peruvian town

“Sadie’s love of writing and for the destination really shines through. Plus, she attempts to communicate a set of emotions inspired by where she was. The writing is highly personal, which is lacking in some of the other entries.”

- Jamie Tabberer, Travel Editor @ Gay Star News

Matilda Bywater – Sustainable Living In Ibiza

“A unique take on a vitally important issue facing the tourism industry- sustainable travel. Her writing is professional, balanced with a lick of humour.”

-  Shona Louisa Jackson, Winner of Student Travel Writer 2015

Natalia Jopling Tanser – Death Valley: The place of life

“I liked the contradiction in the title, it made me want to read on. A simple piece, that has been well thought through and translates the searing heat and epic landscape whilst conveying an underlying message that even the harshest environments sustain life and thus can put our own lives into perspective. She has not been over descriptive and there is a nice pace to the story.”

-  Ramy Salameh, PR Manager @ KTO

Charlotte Little - Why you should visit Ayutthaya - Thailand’s forgotten city

“The writer's enthusiasm really shines through and makes it an engaging piece. She also shows an almost fearless curiosity to discover new places - something that could take her far as a travel journalist.”

-          Ella Buchan, Freelance travel journalist

Sofia Quaglia – Teletransported in the United Arab Emirates

“A piece rich in sweeping imagery, which is almost poetic at times. I felt like I too had been transported into the landscape. She balances informative details with a colloquial, intimate tone for a well rounded account of her time in the UAE.”

-          Shona Louisa Jackson, Winner of Student Travel Writer 2015
