City breaks are a great way to experience a different culture and see amazing sights while getting away from the daily grind of life back home. The best part is, there are some amazing destinations you can fly to in Europe without breaking the bank, making them ideal for students looking for something fun and interesting to do in the breaks between terms.

We’ve put together a list of some of our favourite European destinations to help you start planning your trip to somewhere a bit different.

Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg is probably best known as the setting of The Sound of Music, and many scenes from the iconic film were shot there. There are loads of guided tours on offer to show you the filming locations, or you can make your own way. That’s not Salzburg’s only musical connection, however. It’s also the birthplace of Mozart and his house, Mozart Geburtshaus, contains several fascinating artefacts.

Riga, Latvia

Riga was European Capital of Culture in 2014, and it’s no wonder. The beautiful city – the Latvian capital – has the finest collection of art nouveau architecture in the world, as well as a huge collection of theatres and museums. And if you’re fond of a good pint, a visit to the Old Town allows you to try the local beer surrounded by fairytale medieval buildings in pretty squares.

Prague, Czech Republic

One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Prague, with its 100 spires, is a dream destination for lovers of grand architecture. The romanticism of the city is a big draw for couples, making it a popular wedding destination. If you’re visiting for a less formal occasion, though, there are amazing bars and restaurants in the Old Town and Wenceslas Square, as well as a brilliant nightlife.

Bacau, Romania

At the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, Bacau is a seriously historic city with lots to see and do. Connected by the GhimeÅŸ Pass to Transylvania (home of the iconic character of Count Dracula), Bacau is architecturally gorgeous, with many theatres amongst its delights. For keen astronomers, the Victor Eftimiu Astronomical Observatory is an absolute must-see.

Bratislava, Slovakia

With its baroque palaces and ancient castles, the Slovakian capital of Bratislava looks like something out of a fairytale. Visitors can take in the views from the ramparts of Bratislava Castle or relax in some of the city’s 18.1 square miles of green space. With its rich history (there has been a settlement there since 5000 BC) this is definitely a place for culture vultures.

Bratislava

You can fly direct to Salzburg, Riga, Prague, Bacau, Bratislava and many other great destinations from Liverpool John Lennon Airport in the heart of North West England, and you can even book your flight and hotel direct through their on-site travel shop.
