Picnics can be fun, romantic and healthy if you build in some walking or cycling - but did you know they can be educational too? And we’re not talking about investigating bugs under a microscope or brushing up on geography lessons. Instead we’re talking about an English picnic with a literary twist.

Bacofoil has uncovered the UK’s top five literary picnic locations, with a little help from book worms and foodies nationwide. So pack up the picnic hamper, grab a box of strawberries (and maybe a bottle of wine), dust down the rug and head for the hills with your favourite book. Because there’s really no better way to spend a summer afternoon, is there?

The best literary picnic locations we could find in the UK:

1. Box Hill in Surrey – Emma by Jane Austen

2. Studland Bay in Dorset – The Famous Five by Enid Blyton

3. St James Church in Coolings, Kent – Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

4. Watership Down in Hampshire – Watership Down by Richard Adams

5. Godstow in Port Meadow, Oxford – Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

To make you picnic easy to pack and fun to unwrap, here are a few tips:

1. Try simple wraps with raw vegetable sticks, and make these as colourful as possible. Scientists have shown that reds and greens make a powerful combination that we find hard to resist.

2. Cook a whole chicken stuffed with couscous and herbs for a deliciously simple and aromatic main course. All you need is some salad and bread to keep everyone happy. Don’t forget to use Bacofoil Non-Stick to ensure that the chicken is easy to carve and share.

3. Be inspired by Enid Blyton and bake a ginger cake washed down with lashings of ginger beer!
