Travelling to the US can be something of a pipe dream on a student budget. But never fear! Norwegian is here to save the day!

The low-cost airline launched three routes last week from Gatwick to America, starting at just £149 one way. Gatwick Airport described the development as "game changing."

The move could cause more established airlines like Virgin and BA to slash their prices to compete.

However, although fares to New York will start at under £150, it's not quite the bargain it seems.

Like many short-haul budget airlines, Norwegian will charge passengers for meals, luggage and reserved seating. These costs could amount to an extra £30 on the bill - though it's still a steal.

As well as flights to the big apple, Norwegian will also be flying out of Gatwick to Florida and Los Angeles for £179 and £199 respectively.

CEO of London Gatwick, Stewart Wingate said, “This is one of the most exciting route developments since Gatwick’s change of ownership four years ago.

“Norwegian’s decision to re-establish London Gatwick's links to strategic destinations provide options for affordable travel to popular business and leisure destinations.”
