You might have noticed that we’ve been giving you some good travel advice over the last few months – and now our fantastic taste in beaches and boltholes has been confirmed by the denizen of all holiday gurus, TripAdvisor.

The go-to site for all things travel, TripAdvisor have today revealed their top ten islands for 2015 – and The National Student favourites of Santorini (Greece), Madeira (Portugal) and Bali (Indonesia), are all included.

The Cyclades island of Santorini is in fourth place, due to its “candy-colored houses carved into cliffs, sapphire waters, (and) gleaming white buildings topped with half-spheres the color of a stormy sky” and the “peace (you’ll find) as you roam the black sand beaches or the streets of a provincial village like Imerovigli.”

Santorini is famous for its sunsets, and you’re likely to recognise the white houses built into the cliffs, even if you’ve never visited, that serve as the generic stock image that best represents Greece.

In sixth place is Madeira, and TripAdvisor recommends its highest peak, Pico Ruivo – which you can ascend via wooden walkway in order to “feel like you’ve climbed through the clouds.” The site adds some historical context: “The capital city of Funchal was settled in the 15th century and is a colourful collection of gardens, religious sites, and quirky tourist attractions like the thatched-roof Madeira Story Centre.”

Bali is seventh on the list, a “living postcard” where you can discover stone temples whilst hiking in the jungle, dive amongst old shipwrecks, rejuvenate in a yoga class, drink in the culture in capital city Ubud or just relax on a white sand beach.

Also, we’d just like to point out that you can fly there (and back, although you probably won’t want to) for less than £500 with Indonesia’s national airline, Garuda.

Also making the grade is Bora Bora, in French Polynesia, whose island paradise neighbour Tahiti also made it onto our dream list.

The number one island in the world, according to the ever-reliable people of TripAdvisor, is Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos, where diving and snorkelling is “as convenient as it is stunning, thanks to miles of coral reef that’s easily accessible from the shore” and “the cliffs and crags of Chalk Sound make a lovely backdrop for kayaking the bright turquoise waters.”

In second place is the Hawaiian island of Maui, followed by Roatan in Honduras.

We’d add Sri Lanka and Iceland to TripAdvisor’s list, if we’d been doing the picking. Just saying...
