And the winner of The Great British Bake Off 2016 is...

The sun has set on The Great British Bake Off as we know it. But before the tent is taken down and hoisted off to its new home at Channel 4, the Royal themed final of the show’s seventh season had it all.

We had Andrew crown a mannequin with meringues. We saw the classic Victoria Sponge receive a jam-makeover courtesy of Candice. Jane showed us that being a real baker is about how much you care – and that glitter fixes everything.

It’s been a crazy series. We've had classic weeks playing with pastry and biscuits, and the new and exciting experiments with batter and Tudor recipes.

It seems like an age since twelve nervous amateur bakers first wandered into the tent. Last night, one of them emerged with their head held high and joins an exclusive club of Great British Bakers.  But last night, a victor was finally named as Candice Brown was crowned the seventh winner of The Great British Bake Off.

The PE teacher from Bedfordshire has captivated us from her first appearances on the show. Her gingerbread recreation of the pub she grew up in was adorable – Paul loved it, and as we all know, that Hollywood seal of approval says it all. Her trademark bold lipsticks marked her out as a fierce competitor, and her creativity throughout the competition has really moved her apart from her fellows.

The future is bright for Candice. Past GBBO stars have gone on to do some amazing things, with the success of last year’s winner Nadiya setting the bar high for future champions. Watch this space – it’s likely that confirmed projects will start to be announced pretty soon.

In the meantime, if you want to catch the finalists in the flesh, they’re making several public appearances at book signings across the country this week. Get them while they’re hot.
