It has been confirmed that Broadchurch and The Night Manager star Olivia Colman is a new member of royalty. That is, Colman will be replacing Claire Foy in the role of Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown, playing the monarch in its third and fourth seasons. While this change is not set to happen until 2019, this is also a natural progression: Claire Foy plays our queen in the early years of her reign, becoming queen and riding the waves of her marriage to Prince Philip.

This is a planned and constant shift, with a different actress taking over every two seasons in order for the show to progress to present day, shifting to each new era of her reign. Foy’s second and final season of the show is set to be released in December, with an appearance on Graham Norton this evening confirming that she was always aware of the role being a two-season stint, and that she knew “the role [would be] reincarnated”. While it may come as a surprise to many fans, this change makes total sense, especially with older women sure to be cast as the monarch's story reaches ever closer to the 21st century. This is not the first time that Colman has starred as a member of the royal family, having previously played the future Queen Mother in 2012’s Hyde Park on Hudson, as well as appearing as Queen Anne in next year’s upcoming biographical historical film, The Favourite. It is not yet known who will replace Matt Smith as Colman’s new Prince Phillip, though it is sure to be announced imminently. The Crown is available to watch on Netflix. The second season is set to launch on the streaming service in December.
