A Doctor Who-themed clip featuring Phoebe Waller-Bridge appeared at the end of Tuesday night's Newsnight, sparking further rumours that she will take over from Peter Capaldi in the iconic role.

FleabagWaller-Bridge quickly became the bookies' favourite for the role alongside female stars Miranda Hart and Chewing Gum star Michaela Coel, after a line in Saturday’s series finale was read by fans and critics alike as a hint towards the Doctor’s possible new gender:

THE MASTER: “Is the future going to be all girl?”

THE DOCTOR: “We can only hope.”

However, Waller-Bridge’s theatre company has since taken to Twitter to deny the rumours that she will be the next incarnation of the Doctor.

Waller-Bridge came to prominent public attention last year with the release of her BBC3 sitcom Fleabag, and is currently shooting the new Han Solo film in the US, so perhaps she is just too busy to take on the TARDIS.

With Peter Capaldi’s departure, the internet has been rife with rumours and speculation surrounding his replacement, with the current favourite behind Waller-Bridge being Death in Paradise star Kris Marshall. Other favourites include the likes of Natalie Dormer, Tilda Swinton, Olivia Coleman and David Harewood.
