Doron Ofir, the man behind Jersey Shore, is launching a new show - this time the first ever EDM reality TV series. Whilst EDM is a term we’re largely unfamiliar with this side of the Atlantic, it has come to define the explosion of the dance music scene in America, mainly referring to the likes of Skrillex and Afrojack. Ofir’s site invites producers and DJs to take part in the show with questions such as “What obstacles have you had to overcome to pursue your dream of becoming a DJ?” and for the applicant to “Break down your typical day from the moment you wake up till you call it a night.” However, Canadian vocal DJ Deadmau5 has expressed his displeasure with the show. Although EDM has gained negative connotations of a brash unrestrained sound seen most clearly in Skrillexian dubstep, in an interview with Noisey, Ofir stated that the show will feature those from across the spectrum of electronic music. Along with his own love of the music, one of the main motivations for doing the show is the opportunity for a wider audience to gain an insight into the world of EDM. However you feel about the term EDM, the music itself, or reality TV, it’ll be interesting to see how exactly the series pans out and whether we’ll witness the emergence of new “Superstar” DJs.
