The Oscar winning actor has been commissioned by C4 Education to appear in a new project. Young People Speak will follow a group of teenagers as they prepare and give an important and challenging speech, helped along the way by Colin Firth, a strong believer in the role of public speaking as a force for change and empowerment. Through the documentary, viewers will follow the young people on their journeys as they prepare a speech that is important to them. Despite their different reasons for giving the speech, they are all united in the passion that drives – and the knowledge that their audience will be their biggest yet. Colin Firth will be on hand to offer them advice and build up their confidence in themselves and in their opinions. Firth, the award winning star of The King’s Speech, says: “Making a speech is one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have. I'd say to these young speakers that you'll discover that your voice, just your own voice, has extraordinary powers. It can change things, as many speeches have. "The value of speechmaking is to show us that we all have something to say if we can just find the confidence to say it.” Stuart Cosgrove, Channel 4 Director of Creative Diversity, described Firth as the ideal man for the job, saying: “It would be difficult to think of anyone more relevant and well-known to mentor young people and lead a project about the power and relevance of speeches than internationally respected actor Colin Firth.” The project is a part of a collaboration with Canongate Books, who have recently published an anthology of some of the most important speeches in British history, co-curated by Colin Firth. Channel 4 are currently looking for young people aged between 15-19 to take part in the documentary. If you are interested, further information is available here.
