A nightclub in the West Midlands gave students condoms with their logo on the wrapper, as part of a Freshers’ Week promotion.

But the move has come under fire after it became apparent the condoms, from Kashbah nightclub in Coventry, don’t have symbols on them from either the British Standards Institution or CE European Standards – which are used to show the condoms have been tested to high safety standards.

Thousands of Kasbah Condoms have just landed in

The NHS makes it clear to young people what to look out for on condoms to ensure they are safe.

On their website it says: “Always buy condoms that have the BSI kite mark and the CE mark on the packet. This means that they’ve been tested to high safety standards. Condoms that don’t have the BSI kite mark and CE mark won’t meet these standards, so don’t use them.”

The club defended itself on Twitter…

But some people have been sharing their dismay at the condoms.

A spokesman for the Kasbah said: “We sourced the condoms from a reputable manufacturer and have the full certification that they are perfectly safe to use. But as they were for promotional purposes and carried the Kasbah logo, we actually wanted people to keep them so they were printed with ‘not recommended for use’ on the wrapper.

“The idea was that Freshers’ Week students would see them as a novelty item and keep them as a memento of their student days – to be reminded of the great night they had at the Kasbah.

“We explained this to Trading Standards when they called us but this was not reported in the media when the story was carried.

“The Kasbah is very conscious of the important role we play in maintaining the safety of young people visiting our venue and would never do anything to put this at risk.”
