The QS worst university in the UK has been declared

The QS World University Rankings 2016/17 were released last week, naming and shaming another poor university as the very worst for the upcoming year.

We’re pretty surprised by the answer, and we’re not just saying that to make you keep reading.

It *appears* that taking the unwanted mantle this year is the University of Salford, which hasn’t fared too badly in the rankings in previous years. We'd heard it was pretty good, in fact.

But wait, let's not judge Salford too harshly - it might actually only be joint bottom, because also languishing in the 701+ in the world rank are nine other unis, including Huddersfield, Manchester Met, Greenwich and UCLan.

Sorry about that, guys.

You can see the list for yourself here:

Also, we'd just like to point out that Salford is having a sex and robots conference soon, and if bonking bots aren't enough to push a university up the rankings we’re not quite sure what is.

There has been very little change at the top of the table (when is there ever...?) with Cambridge and Oxford predictably hogging the top spots, and University College London (UCL) taking the bronze. Yeah yeah, well done you.

The ranking is based on academic reputation, international faculty, citations per faculty member and a whole bunch of other things, and measures universities against their peers across the world. Not all universities are included in the ranking.

Previous winners of the dubious title (albeit from various other university “ranking” lists) are the University of Wales Trinity St David, Bucks New University and London Met.

And chin up, Salford - we’ve heard you’ve got lots of other things to offer. Bonking bots included.

This article was edited on 24th September to reflect that the University of Salford is actually joint bottom of the ranking, with a number of other universities.
