Two men have been charged after a series of sex attacks near Cardiff University during freshers' week.

Student Khalid Alahmadi, 23, appeared at Cardiff magistrates on Monday accused of raping a 19-year-old woman. That attack is alleged to have taken place in Gorsedd Gardens, just opposite Cardiff City Hall and Cardiff University.

Alahmadi, a University of South Wales student, listening to the proceeedings through an interpreter did not enter a plea, although his solicitor Neil Davies said his client would contest the charges. He will appear at Cardiff crown court on 12th October.

Cardiff local Remus Hamza, 40, appeared at the magistrates on Saturday accused of raping a 20-year-old close to the main university building. He was remanded into custody and will appear at Cardiff crown court on 12th October.

South Wales Police continue to investigate a report of a sexual offence at a house in the Cathays student area of the city, less than a mile from the university.

All the attacks took place during freshers' week, with students' union officials announcing extra buses to get students home safely.

Ch Supt Belinda Davies for South Wales Police, said: “All reports of sexual assault are taken extremely seriously. Cardiff is a safe city and I want to keep it that way. I want to reassure local residents and the parents of young people who are coming to Cardiff, often away from home for the first time, that we will do all we can to help to keep people safe.

“As our investigation continues we want people to be able to go out, enjoy themselves and feel safe in our capital city. Crimes like this are never the victims’ fault, but I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to follow basic safety advice so they keep themselves and their friends safe.

“Please stay together when you’re out at night, drink responsibly and make sure you all go home together. Always plan your journey home, book a reputable taxi firm, and if walking please keep to well-lit areas.”
