There are lots of things that go into making an incredibly good student city – world class universities, cultural opportunities, diversity, night life and opportunities to bag a job afterwards might be the most obvious.

So, which city has been named as having enough of these things to be named the best in the world to be a student?

Sadly it’s not a UK university that has bagged the top spot – although London did come a close second.

Beating London to the top of QS’s Best Student Cities 2013-2014 is Paris, which takes the title for the second year running.

London has 22 universities against Paris’s 17, and was described by QS as “a nerve-centre of global academia” – although the cost of living in the capital as a student was a big negative.

One of the reasons Paris came top, according to QS, was because of its low tuition fees paired with intensive teaching – as well as the beauty and historical significance of the city.

Back in the UK, Manchester and Edinburgh also made it into the top 40. Dublin is 15th in the table.

Honestly though, we're just surprised that newly revealed Capital of Culture 2017 Hull doesn't make an appearance.

The top ten in full is:

  1. Paris
  2. London
  3. Singapore
  4. Sydney
  5. Zurich
  6. Melbourne
  7. Hong Kong
  8. Boston
  9. Montreal
  10. Munich
What do you think of the result? Should any other UK cities have made it into the top ten? Let us know your thoughts below...
