Brothel blunder: Brighton students move into house of ill repute

At first glance, 1 Montpelier Road looks like an ideal student house: seaside views, great location and a quirkily painted, spacious interior.

Yet this “student house” concealed a secret history - and a sex dungeon.

Unfortunately for the hapless students who moved in, 1 Montpelier Road was not simply a great student home but also Brighton’s most notorious brothel, and the former headquarters of the ‘Brighton Belles’.

Ben Miller and Rebekah Sims first became suspicious when their home was besieged nightly by amorous gentlemen. The late night visits became so frequent in fact that the friends needed to put up a sign in the window to staunch the flow of disgruntled visitors.

Miller moved into their new seaside digs just weeks after the Brighton Belles relocated, leading to much confusion for displeased customers. The disappointment caused some clients to turn violent: "One of our friends was even punched in the face because the guy thought we were trying to keep all the ladies for ourselves," he said.

The pair also made an unsettling discovery behind a hidden door, where they found a path leading down to a windowless dungeon in the basement. Here they found high heels, sex aids and suitcases crammed with "strange velvety costumes."

Many have been quick to criticise the agent, Pavilion Properties, as Miller claims to have had no prior knowledge of the property's former life:  "We had no idea that the house had been a brothel – our agent Pavilion Properties never warned us."

However Pavilion Properties argues that they had ‘no idea’ and were blissfully unaware of 1 Montpelier Road’s chequered past.

A spokesperson for the agency disclosed that: "We have had a number of complaints from the tenants, and we are doing everything we can to help them out."
