More than 80 universities across the UK will join forces with British Heart Foundation (BHF) shops this year in a bid to fight heart disease and beat the £200,000 raised from students’ unwanted possessions in 2012.
The initiative, adopted by 28 Universities last year, will see BHF clothing banks, donation bins and collection bags at drop off points around university campuses, where students can discard their unwanted things.
BHF Shops are urging students and staff to take full advantage of these ‘designated donating grounds’ and are asking people to raid their wardrobes in the hope of exceeding the 96 tonnes of bags that were donated last year.
Mike Taylor, Retail Director for the BHF, comments: “We’re excited to be working alongside so many universities to encourage students to donate their unwanted items to us.
"This scheme will be a huge help in funding the fight against heart disease whilst providing a great way for students to get rid of the things they don’t want.
“Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer, shattering the lives of too many children, parents and grandparents - you can join the fight for every heartbeat by having a clear out and using the new facilities to donate your unwanted things.”
A spokesperson for the BHF added: “This is the perfect opportunity for our students to be both charitable and environmentally friendly with their unwanted items. We hope that all students get on board and take advantage of this convenient new service by having a clear out and donating their unwanted items.”
Students can find out if their university is taking part by contacting the Environmental Officer (or similar) within their Union.
