The Cambridge Student has denied claims from an international newspaper that it is a racist mouthpiece for the university.
The accusations, made by The News International, based in Pakistan, claim that TCS are running a large-scale smear campaign against Arsalan Ghani, President of the Cambridge University Graduate Union and originally of Pakistan. Moreover, they claim that TCS is “considered a mouthpiece for the university” and that it is known “for attacking ethnic minority students.”
TCS have hotly refuted these claims in an article on their website, stating that the claims are “untrue” and that the newspaper has “consistently campaigned against racism in the city of Cambridge”.
In response to the accusations of being a mouthpiece for the university, TCS has said that “The Cambridge Student is, and always has been, an editorially independent newspaper. Were this independence ever to be compromised, the TCS team would refuse to go to print.”
The Pakistani paper also claims that “racism at Cambridge is flourishing”, based on an unnamed report by The Guardian.
Both articles list events from Ghani’s time in office. The News International believes that various smear campaigns have been launched against the president, whereas TCS mentions various revelations the paper have made, including “Ghani was directly involved in the disappearance of over £1000 from the GU [Graduate Union]”.
According to The News International, a Cambridge spokesperson “denied backing a racist campaign against Ghani”. The Students’ Union at Cambridge “refused to dignify The New’s International’s allegations with a response.”
