Congratulations are in order for the city of Birmingham, after being diagnosed as the STD capital of the UK.
The honour has been given to them by online health clinic Health Express, which took the data from five thousand online consultations to find the UK’s sorest spot for sexual diseases.
The Midlands city topped the table comfortably, with East London coming second and Glasgow not far behind in third.
Potentially, however, the survey is actually showing Birmingham as the most health-aware city on the list, as it is only measuring consultations rather than diagnoses; meaning that the “cleaner” cities on the list could actually be riddled with STDs and are just too afraid to seek treatment. The National Student has no opinion on which is more likely.
As you’d expect, Chlamydia is the most commonly treated disease, and 16-24 year olds are still the most regularly affected. Overall, STD cases are still on the rise, despite drives from various further education institutions to promote safe sex.
The safest way to avoid STDs is to use a condom. Someone should tell that to the Top 10 cities for STDs, found below:

- Birmingham
- East London
- Glasgow
- South East London
- South West London
- Manchester
- Cardiff
- North London
- Sheffield
- West London
