Are you passionate about making a difference to the environment? If so, npower want to reward you for it – with a once in a lifetime trip to the Amazon rainforest. Entering its fifth year, the npower Future Leaders Challenge is searching for students that have the intelligence, the passion and the drive to cultivate long-lasting change to the environmental impact of their university or local area. The winners will live and learn with the Kaxinawá tribe in the Brazilian Amazon, experiencing the effects of climate change on one of the most rural communities on the planet. After helping to install some of the renewable energy sources that are a key part of npower’s business, they will return and be given a six week internship, experiencing various aspects of npower’s energy business. To earn the opportunity, students have to first make a difference. In teams of two to four, students must come up with a plan that will improve the energy efficiency in their university or local area in the long term, and make a short DVD detailing how they plan to carry out the scheme. Judges are looking for originality, creativity, and something that can be realistically completed by the grand final in November 2013. Shortlisted entries will attend an adventure weekend on Dartmoor in June, focusing on teambuilding and employability skills. The teams will then receive a £400 cheque to help carry out their scheme, and document it in a way that demonstrates the long term impact that it will have on the environment. The grand final will take place in London in November, where teams will be judged on a combination of their performance on Dartmoor and the success of their energy saving scheme. Eight students will be chosen as the winners, to travel to the Amazon in June 2014. Scheme ideas are due by 5pm on 10th May.
