More than 20 students are looking for a new home after their Sheffield accommodation collapsed.

Amidst growing claims of sub-standard student accommodation (see here), student residents of a city centre flat in Sheffield were shocked when a section of roof gave way, causing the top floor to collapse into the shop below.

Dylan Wang, the owner of the ruined shop, told The Star newspaper: “It is a miracle no one was killed or seriously hurt. Somebody must be to blame for this.”

Councillor Jack Scott, Sheffield Council’s cabinet member for environment and street scene, agreed: “It is a miracle no one was seriously injured.

“Re-homing the occupants who were living in this building is our key priority.

“We will also be working with businesses affected by this collapse.”

Sheffield Homes provided emergency accommodation for those students left with nowhere to stay, but over 20 students affected by the collapse won’t be heading back home any time soon, as Sheffield Council has ordered the building to be demolished.
