Calling all film-buffs! Are you a graduate or film maker looking for a full time job?

Pretzel Films, the multi-award winning production company based in London, is bringing a different approach to the way new talent is discovered.

For the first time they are asking recent graduates and directors (who have been working in the industry for under two years) to submit their best films to the 1st Annual Pretzel Film Directors Showcase.

Entries must be in by 11th March and a panel of external industry experts, together with Pretzel, will create a shortlist, to be announced on 28th March and posted on Vimeo. The shortlist of successful applicants will be invited to Pretzel HQ in London to present their films in early April, and a winner will then be offered a paid full time job as a Pretzel Director.

Every year since 2005 Pretzel have taken one new director on as a full time employee within the company, although this is the first time the competition has been run through a Directors Showcase.

The company was founded by Pj Bickford, who was formerly Creative Director of Blue Juice Marketing, and Pete Shuttleworth, formerly Commercials Producer at Ridley Scott Associates and Black Dog Films.

Pj says: “Our goal is to create a business that supports and develops this country’s great talent. We want to give a platform across our company to give talented youth the chance to start their careers in our industry.

“Pretzel was founded on these principles and eight years in we are proud to say, its working!”

Pretzel’s mission is to give talent a start, followed by guidance and inspiration - and the chance to make short-form video projects full time. It gives trainees a unique insight into the full workings of a commercial production company and everything that goes with being a working director.

The apprenticeship nurtures and mentors directorial talent, culminating in commercial work with agencies and award-winning corporate films.

Clearly, the apprenticeship scheme works - only last year one of Pretzel’s former directors won silver for Best Newcomer at Cannes.

Pete Shuttleworth adds: “Pretzel is unique. When a director joins us we mentor them and help them keep working. By supporting their craft in this way, they can climb as high as their creative talent takes them. And we do it in a supportive, busy and collaborative environment.

“Having worked in several of the very best commercials companies, I know this is sadly not as common in the industry as it should be for entry-level directors.”
