With the popularity of dating sites rising, a survey of 300 UK students has revealed that one in three have looked for a sexual partner on the internet.

The results form part of a survey by FreshMeet, the UK’s first student-only dating site. Recently launched by two ex-Liverpool and Lincoln University students, Anthony Purkiss and Tom Witcherley, FreshMeet is strictly for students – users can only join using an official ‘.ac.uk’ email address.

Co-founder Anthony Purkiss explains: “It’s no surprise to us that students are now more likely than ever to embrace the world of online dating when it comes to meeting a love interest. When we decided to launch FreshMeet we were just out of uni and still involved in the social aspect of student life. We could see for ourselves that there was a huge market for a student-only dating site.

“No other student dating website does this. Unlike some of our competitors, we can assure our users that every single student on FreshMeet is real, with a genuine completed profile, which we run through a sophisticated matching system. If it’s not completed, it’s deleted!”

Of course another major issue for students is money – or more specifically, the lack of it. From their perspective as recent graduates, FreshMeet’s entrepreneurial founders were aware of the huge impact disposable income has on the social habits of students, particularly with tuition fees on the horizon.

Co-founder Tom Witcherley states: “The UK’s average dating site user pays just over £20 a month, which is far too much for students. We sought expert advice to come up with a more realistic pricing structure that would also help the site pick up user momentum. The result is that our users only pay £3 per month. It’s dating for the price of a pint.”

The site launched in September 2012 and has had sign-ups from students across the UK.

“Students can chat and flirt with each other online and then, if they hit it off, meet up in real life,” says Tom. “They might even find they’re in the same halls of residence!

“Being a student isn’t just about studying, it’s about finding your next adventure,” he continues, “and with FreshMeet, it could be closer than you think.”
