The all electric motorsport Formula E is due to return to the streets of London for the conclusion of the 2019/20 season with a new circuit centred around the city’s docklands and ExCeL exhibition centre.

Formula E has described the arrangement as part of a ‘multi-year agreement’ in an official statement with the first of the events due to take place between 25th-26th July 2020.

The all new circuit will start indoors under the cover of the ExCeL centre then take the drivers through a total of 23 corners across the edge of the Royal Victoria Docks in a clockwise direction. Formula E has not graced the streets of London since the 2015/16 season when a track based at Battersea park was used to close it’s first two seasons.

Despite the existence of an agreement to continue hosting Eprix at Battersea, Formula E were forced to withdraw the arrangement after resolute opposition from local residents. However, Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag has been upfront in this intentions to bring racing back to the streets of London.

He stated: “Every motor sport series would love to host an event in London – this has been our desire for quite some time now and we’re delighted to have found a new home in the Royal Docks at ExCeL London.

“We have a growing base of knowledgeable and passionate fans in the UK, and this race adds to a fantastic summer of sport as a world-class event we hope Londoners can be proud of.”

Formula E has traditionally relied on street circuits bringing the action right to the fans’ doorstep. It is hoped that beyond simply providing entertainment the London Eprix will also be able to champion the adoption of clean technologies and sending a strong message about the problems of air pollution in the city.

This announcement comes just as Formula E is due a return to British television with the Hong Kong Eprix being shown on BBC 2 this weekend.
