The latest edition of Football Manager will feature gay players for the first time. The simulation game, which is highly popular selling more than 15 million copies worldwide, will allow fictional, computer-generated players known as new-gens to come out in the 2018 version of the game.

"Part of the reason we decided to do this is because there are gay footballers," Miles Jacobson, the game's director, told BBC Sport.

"We know from the amount of professionals that there has to be players who are gay but feel they don't want to come out.”

Players will receive a news item in their inbox and clubs will even receive a slight boost in revenue due to new attention from the LGBTQ community.

"I just think it's crazy that in 2017 we are in a world where people can't be themselves." Jacobson added.

"Being gay is just a totally normal thing in life, and it's the right thing to put it in the game because it's something that we're going to be seeing in the future."

Currently no Premier League player has been openly gay whilst still playing in the top flight, though former Premier League player, Thomas Hitzlsperger came out as gay in 2014 - four months after he retired.

Hitzlsperger, who won 52 caps for Germany, said at the time, "We still have a long way to go because we fear a reaction and we don't know what will happen," he added "I can't imagine playing football and doing this at the same time."
