After weeks of reading through entries, we’re pleased to announce that the winner of our short story competition is Lewis Carter (pictured) from the University of Leeds.

Lewis’ story, entitled Shames Leaves a Mark, really stood out amongst the entries and impressed us with its tension – but we won’t say any more. There won’t be any spoilers here!

You can read Shame Leaves a Mark here.

The short story competition was run in association with Twentieth Century Home Entertainment, to support the Home Entertainment release of quirky coming of age comedy Mistress America.

To enter, writers had to sign up to The National Student and upload their 2,000 word short stories on the theme of “Growing Up.”

We had 18 stories submitted, covering issues from anxiety and parental pressure to death, gang violence, terrorism and homelessness.

Lewis' interpretation of the theme focuses on a pivotal day in the life of 11-year-old schoolboy Callum.

Read all the entries to the competition here.

Lewis’ story will now be published in a hardback volume by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Congratulations Lewis!

Mistress America is available on Digital HD in the UK, courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Watch the trailer below:
