Suicide. A harsh word and one, it seems, that people are increasingly afraid to use. Yet it is suicide that is the biggest cause of death in men under the age of 35, and it is suicide that is the biggest killer of young people in the United Kingdom. Today is Suicide prevention day. Today, it is time to talk.

With suicide being such a regular cause of death in people aged between 10 and 35 it would be easy to think that people are aware of the sad yet very real frequency of its occurrence. However a recent YouGov survey has revealed that 78% of people do not know that it is the biggest killer of our young people; it is for this reason PAPYRUS, a group for the prevention of suicide among young people, is running a leading campaign this yea

It is a common misconception that talking about suicide increases the likelihood of a person taking their own life, and it was this reason in the recent PAPYRUS survey that was chosen as the main reason for not talking about suicide.

Ged Flynn, CEO of PAPYRUS, is hoping that their campaign can go some way to debunk this myth: "All the evidence shows that naming suicide is a relief for the person at risk and that we cannot create the idea by talking about suicide," he says.

Mental illness and more specifically suicide are far too often pushed aside as problems for the individual, so PAPYRUS are taking a direct approach at tackling this stigma through their #TalkThroughTheTaboo campaign.

Founded in 1997 by a group of parents with direct experience of losing a young person to suicide, PAPYRUS aims to break through the stigma attached to suicide - which recent studies show is a clear barrier to getting help.
