A whiteboard calendar featuring a list of LGBTQ+ History Month events was defaced with homophobic language at the University for the Creative Arts. LGBTQ+ History Month is commemorated in the month of February and aims to "promote equality and diversity for the benefit of the public" by raising awareness of LGBT+ people, their lives and their history of struggle. This year's theme is 'Peace, Activism and Reconciliation,' marking 50 years since the Stonewall Riots in the USA. The calendar's header, which read LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH was defaced to read "LGBTQ+ is TRASH HISTORY MONTH". The slur "BATTY BOYS!!!" was also added to the end of the calendar. The UCA Students' Union released a statement condemning the vandalism and asked for witnesses to come forward. The statement included information on the LGBTQ+ workshops delivered 'to over 90 staff members which has brought staff together and helped to inspire projects around LGBTQ+ attainment.' A spokesperson for the University for the Creative Arts said: "The university is deeply saddened by this isolated incident. We are incredibly proud of the LGBTQ+ community here at UCA, and are committed to ensuring an inclusive learning environment for everyone. We do not tolerate homophobia or any other form of bigotry and will be working with the Students’ Union to ensure that we don’t see anything like this again in the future." Image credit:Chris Whippet
