Student denies raping classmate who later killed herself

A man has denied raping Keele University student Hannah Stubbs – who killed herself after the alleged attack. Elgan Varney, 32, a fellow student at Keele University appeared at Stoke Crown Court on Friday and denied two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The first allegation of rape supposedly took place between October and December 2014, and the second in February 2015. The sexual assault allegedly took place on 27 February 2015. He was released on unconditional bail, but is suspended from the university pending the outcome of his case. An inquest in Stubb’s death recorded a narrative verdict, saying the suicide came after a battle with post-traumatic stress disorder. The trial starts on October 24th and is expected to last a week.
