A second year student escaped from an attempted mugging - and then was shot in the back with a pellet gun.

Travellers set up camp with caravans in the Walmgate Stray area of York at the weekend, sparking complaints after attacks on local students.

Student newspaper Nouse reported that student Jack Harvey, editor of blog The Yorker, was walking near the sports centre towards campus when he was set upon.

Harvey said: “A group of seven or eight children approached me [from the camp] and a little girl, with her hand stretched out, said, ‘Give us money!’”

After refusing and walking away, the children shot him three times in the back with a pellet gun.

Harvey took shelter in the sports centre, where the police were called.

Firearms officers were not deployed and Harvey was not seriously injured.

Attacks on students from the camp have increased with previous reports of poo being thrown at passers-by.

Camp residents were issued with a 10 day notice requesting they relocate shortly after their arrival, but there has been no word yet of any sign of movement.

YUSU President Ben Leatham, speaking to Nouse, said: “A number of minor incidents have taken place on the field near the Sports Centre over the past few days. The police have been made aware of them. If you do experience any issues please report them to campus security at 01904 32 4444 and make sure if you are in the area to look after your valuables.”
