McDonald's security caught on video telling student to remove her headscarf

Last week, a Muslim student was allegedly refused service at a McDonald's branch in North London unless she removed her headscarf.
A video posted online by a friend shows the moment a security guard tells the student that it is 'just a matter of taking it off' before he is cut short.

The victim tells him she wears it for religious reasons before a member of the public tries to intervene on her behalf.

"I wear this for religious reasons and I'm not ashamed of it," she said.

"I will stand in line and I will get the food that I want because this isn't okay, this is a hate crime."

In an interview with The Guardian, the student who asked to remain anonymous said she couldn't believe this was happening to her:

"It’s finally happening to me,’ like it has to so many hijabis. It didn’t feel real because I had seen so many videos like this and it was finally happening to me in real life. I was in so much disbelief.

"The friend I was with was shocked and scared, and said it was a risky situation. When it was over, I finally realised how these situations can become dangerous. This is not a one-off thing.

"I will never walk into McDonald's again."

A spokesperson for the chain said in a statement:

"McDonald's does not have any policy in place which restricts or prevents anyone wearing a hijab, or any other religious dress, from entering the restaurant.

"We welcome customers of all faiths and would like to apologise to the customers as this situation should not have taken place.

"We are taking this matter extremely seriously and are addressing this with the individuals involved."
