A controversial production about Jimmy Savile is set to open in London.
An Audience with Jimmy Savile, lingers on the tongues of theatre go-ers, critics and journalists around the UK as Jonathan Maitland's new production is to be part of Park Theatre's new season.
With the infamous and risque role played by impressionist and actor Alistair McGowan, the production is certainly raising eyebrows.
The production will be the first to encapsulate, display and examine Jimmy Savile and the sex scandal that surrounds his name. Described as "semi-reportage", Maitland's play runs in Finsbury Park from 10th June to 11th July.
In an interview with the Guardian he said: "It has changed everything; it has changed the way we look at abuse, it has changed the way we prosecute it, it has changed attitudes towards it, the way we treat the survivors of it."
The show follows Maitland's Dead Sheep, delving into the world of 80s politics and Thatcher's government.
Being a regular reporter on ITV's Tonight programme and a journalist for 30 years, Maitland told the Guardian that drama can, in some cases, be more effective in telling the true story than current affairs television.
People have taken to social media in anger over such a play being performed.
“The victims were exploited by not being listened to and this play is giving them a voice”, Maitland told the Guardian.
