Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has died at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke, her family have confirmed.

Mark and Carol Thatcher said that their mother, who had suffered ill health for a number of years, died ‘peacefully’ this morning.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “We have lost a great leader, a great Prime Minister and a great Briton.”

He will return to the UK from Madrid later today after cancelling planned talks with French President Francois Hollande in Paris.

The Queen is said to be saddened by the news.

Baroness Thatcher was the UK’s first and so far only female Prime Minister, leading the country from 1979-1990. She was the longest serving Prime Minister of the 20th Century.

A greengrocer’s daughter from Lincolnshire, she was elected MP for North Finchley in 1959, becoming Prime Minister 20 years later. She won General Elections in 1979, 1983 and 1987, and became a controversial figure after privatising a number of state owned industries.

She was also at the helm during the Falklands Conflict.

Baroness Thatcher’s life was immortalised in the 2011 film The Iron Lady.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said that she was “one of the defining figures in modern British politics.”

She will be given a ceremonial funeral at St. Paul’s Cathedral, with military honours.
