It's been a tough 6 years for Sky Ferreira.

Following the release of 2013's Night Time, My Time, she has tirelessly campaigned for agency over her own creative process. After being locked out of her own Soundcloud account and a trail of abandoned release dates ("I refuse to put out something that isn't honest") the songstress finally returns with the brooding 'Downhill Lullaby'.

While Night Time, My Time was laden with synth-heavy 80s pop, seasoned with 90s alternative rock, the sultry gothic ballad 'Downhill Lullaby' tones down the tempo and ups the elegance, complete with its own string section.

Co-produced with Twin Peaks music supervisor Dean Hurley, it emulates, in auditory terms, the aesthetic of the David Lynch series. Both dramatic, sultry and oozing cinematic glamour, it sees a more mature Ferreira exploring different textures and musical timbres.

Her long-awaited second album Machoism is slated for release this year; but hold steady, anything Ferreira announces should be taken with trepidation. Ferreira is a new breed of pop-star, waging war against the big-labels and their control over an artist's creative process.

'Downhill Lullaby' showcases that Ferreira is more than just a pop star of the 2013 Tumblr age. Listen to the new single now.
