Gurr met at university in Berlin and their 2016 album In My Head received much critical acclaim. ‘Zu Spät’ is the second of singles released this year and is due to make an appearance on the band’s forthcoming EP She Says due for release on 5th April. Like much of their previous material, this track balances an upbeat, jangly surf-rock vibe with a bittersweet melancholy.

The duo enlisted the help of Matthew Molner, the producer behind Sunflower Bean’s debut album Human Ceremony in the making of these new tracks. In ‘Zu Spät’ we fluctuate between yesterday’s heyday and today’s indifference, the lyrics expressing frustration at not being able to get it together and exasperation at the belated pleas of the track’s antagonist.

In My Head’s punk spirit still bursts through in patches, such as in the shouted “woah!” before the song changes gear halfway through and in the distorted backing vocals accompanying the concluding chant of “Alles! Alles! Alles! Alles viel zu spät” (all too late). Overall, however, the duo leans in on the despondency that was latent in their debut to create an impression that rings in the ears long after one listen.
