What comes to mind when you listen to your favourite track? Global music streaming service Deezer challenged artist Daniel Cordas to create two pairs of trainers based on his interpretation of ‘Love Song’ by Zak Abel - with Zak’s help, of course!

British singer/songwriter Zak Abel and artist Daniel Cordas collaborated on three pairs of trainers for the ‘Music with Sole’ project that were presented on Tuesday 18th September at The Urban Art Gallery, a stone throw from London Bridge station.

The artists

You may remember Zak from his 2017 album 'Only When We’re Naked' most popular track: 'Everybody Needs Love' and 'Unstable'. But it’s his latest track ‘Love Song’ that is the subject of this art experiment.

London-based trainer artist Daniel Cordas has already collaborated with big names such as Red Bull, Adidas, Harrods, Jimmy Choo or Canon and now Deezer.

Talking about this project, Sulinna Ong, VP of Artist Marketing at Deezer, says: “Our mission for ‘Music with Sole’ was to convey how one song can be uniquely personal and meaningful to different people.” And Daniel Cordas to add how "integral [the] role music plays in sneaker culture.”

So...did it work?

The trainers

The three pairs are very distinctive with Zak's interpretation based on the mood and colours it inspires; whereas Daniel's is more focused on the lyrics, using metaphors - such as 'burning bridges'. The result is incredible and it clearly demonstrates people hear different things when they listen to a song.

Trainer #1: Zak’s Interpretation of ‘Love Song’:
“Creating and listening to music is a highly emotional experience. When I wrote Love Song, it was based on a previous relationship and my feelings at the time."

Trainer #2 Daniel’s Interpretation of ‘Love Song’:

"There is a lot of power in visual metaphors of music and we’ve definitely been able to demonstrate this through our trainer collection.”

The two artists also worked on a collaborative trainer project, expressing how they find their flow. And it looks like they did!
