The Heavy are undeniably one of the best live bands in the world!

The HeavyThey are returning to the fold with a new album and tonight are introducing a small and select crowd to the wonders of this new material in the confines of The Moth Club in Hackney, a venue that steps back in time to the northern working men’s clubs of old.

This intimate setting is the perfect venue to launch Hurt & The Merciless a new record that on the strength of tonight’s airing is a more personal affair than some of their past records.

The majority of the show focuses on this new material which retains the bands powerful brand of rock and soul but delves further into areas of 60s psych than before.

It is a testament to this new material that brand new tracks get almost the same reaction as their old classics. Case in point is new single ‘Since You Been Gone’ which is an energetic, soul explosion packed with Motown horns and dirty rock n roll guitar riffs.

At no point are the quartet on anything be top form.

As always it is front-man Kelvin Swaby’s energy and classic soul voice (think Bath’s answer to Otis Redding) that lifts the set into the realms of magnificence. He vocals are on top form, and he works the crowd every step of the way through the immense on-stage heat. He makes each and every person in the crowd feel part of the experience.

Leading into hit ‘What Makes A Good Man’ he tells of how he lost his father in January, who was a good man, to sighs of pity from the crowd. He says that’s not what this is about, this is a time for celebration before launching into one of the best songs of the last decade.

Nothing can really do the sheer power and joy of a Heavy live set justice. This is a band that needs to be on your live music agenda, and with the new album about to drop in April now is the time for everyone to finally realise just how good this band is.

In the meantime check out the video for the new single ‘Since You Been Gone’:
