Two years back Petite Noir’s introductory single ‘Till We Ghosts’ promised us something special to come. New track ‘Chess’ is that ‘something special’.
Half Congolese, half Angolan Yannick Ilunga is the all-encompassing musical artist, as a singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist he formerly fronted “misty pop” electronic band Popskarr and collaborated with Spoek Mathambo.
‘Chess’ see him reconfigured as a one-man TV On The Radio, offering a downbeat, echoed kind of soul that fits nicely into the icy, future RnB sound that has dominated critical acclaim in 2014 (Young Fathers, FKA Twigs).
This take on this template is driven by glitches and blips, but cut through with an undeniably pop melody.
Now cutting tunes for Domino sister label Double Six, we expect big things in 2015 from Petite Noir.
