Playlist: An introduction to hip hop
Coming out of New York City in the 1970s hip hop has now filtered into every aspect of our culture – music, language, fashion and art.
The genre has gone through many guises from bloc-party party tunes, through the sample-heavy late eighties and the opposing ideologies of Gangsta rap and the Daisy Age groups.
This all paved the way for the nineties dominance of the Wu Tang Clan and the likes of Jay Z and Kanye West taking hip hop into the commercial stratosphere.
The genre has constantly innovated, with a surprising level of variation throughout its history. If you have any interest in the big urban music names at the moment check out our introduction playlist to the hip hop genre to hear where it all came from....
