After a truckload of hype, awards and a critical backlash the weight of expectation for Alt J’s second album must be immense.
Following the departure (on good terms) of bassist Gwil Sainsbury it was inevitable the now trio would emerge with a different sound. But rather than different, Alt J return with an evolution.
The first offering to emerge online ‘Hunger In The Pine’ maintains the bands textured layers of sound and eerie atmosphere.
With a subtle electro feel this track merges in darker elements than on their original work. Developing horns, intensifying synths and sampled drums teamed with creeping ‘oooh’ hums build a moody backdrop.
It’s no news that Alt J are musicians using unorthodox traits to spark interest in their music.
A surprising element to this is a sampled snippet of vocals from Miley Cyrus’ ‘4x4’ creating an intriguing juxtaposition and clash of confidence.
Cyrus’s vocals bounce ‘I’m a female rebel’ launching into a contradicting duet with Newman’s yearning ‘hunger of the pine’.
'Hunger of the Pine' provides insight into the greatness of things to come on new album This Is All Yours.
Ironic yet dynamic, the track is a journey of dips and falls with next to no structure, but done hauntingly.
Catch them on tour in the UK this September.
This Is All Yours set for release 22nd September.
