As festival season fast approaches (or in the case of Coachella go-ers, has already begun) it’s easy to get swept up in the magic of headline acts and floral headbands, completely overlooking the hefty price tags attached to these hedonistic weekends.

With this in mind, UK flight comparison website compareandfly.com has conducted some research into the costs surrounding these British weekenders and discovered that once tickets and travel costs are totted up, it can work out just as cheap, if not cheaper, to fly to sunnier climes for your festival fill.

When taking into account travel to and from a UK festival, as well as the ticket itself, the costs creep up... A Londoner travelling to Glastonbury can spend up to £281.14*on a ticket and travel whilst the likes of Benicassim in Barcelona and Exit in Belgrade both come to under £250, including ticket, return flights and transfers. Here are compareandfly.com’s five festival recommendations…

EXIT, Belgrade, 10th-13th July

Price: £176.10 (includes festival ticket, return flights between London and Budapest, and transfer)

EXIT (pictured) is held annually at the Petrovaradin Fortress in the city of Novi Sad in Serbia, this year taking place between 10th and 13th July. The festival was started as a student movement fighting for democracy and peace in Serbia and still today upholds a strong social mission to help youth in the Balkans.

Meadows in the Mountains, Bulgaria, 13th-15th June

Price: £210.57 (includes festival ticket, return flights between London and Sofia, and transfer)

Set in the beautiful Rhodope Mountains, in the Bulgarian village of Polkovnik Serafimovo, Meadows in the Mountains revolves around the sunrise each morning. The event prides itself on escaping the trends of other festivals with a fundamental ethos of wildlife and fauna.

Benicassim, Barcelona, 17th-20th July

Price: £244.48 (includes festival ticket, return flights between London and Barcelona, and transfer)

Benicassim Festival is a four day music festival taking place on the east coast of Spain between Barcelona and Valencia, between the 17th and 20th July. This year is the 20th anniversary of the festival, and will see headliners Kasabian perform alongside the likes of Paulo Nutini, Example and Lily Allen.

Worldwide, France, 30th June-6th July

Price: £259.86 (includes festival ticket, return flights between London and Beziers, and transfer)

Worldwide celebrates its ninth festival this July, offering a varied mix of percussion, acoustic and house based sets. Highlights include the opening party at the Paul Valery Museum and the Street Party on the cobbled quayside just in front of the Regional Modern Art Museum.

Primavera Sound, Barcelona, 28th-31st May

Price: £279.57 (includes festival ticket, return flights between London and Barcelona, and transfer)

Primavera Sound takes place in Barcelona between 28th and 31st May, channeling pop, rock and underground dance music. This year’s lineup includes Arcade Fire, Queens of the Stone Age and Disclosure.

Top Tip… don’t worry that exchange rates and spending money abroad will make the whole festival experience more costly; with a Caxton card you can preload Euros onto one card and use it during your trip. Once your Euros are loaded on at the exchange rate of the day, the amount you will have to spend doesn’t change, so you know exactly how much you have – and you can withdraw your money from any ATM for free.

*Based on a standard ticket for the full weekend at Glastonbury (£210 + £5 booking fee), £42 in petrol travelling from London to Glastonbury and £25 parking
