Country isn’t a genre associated with British music. But this month Shovels and Rope are bringing the genre in its purest form.
Following a tour supporting Jack White in 2012, the band, consisting of a husband and wife duo, are coming to the UK for the first time later this month in a one off show at Scala in London
'Birmingham' is the bands most popular song to date, earning them plaudits across the board from US critics.
A simple, acoustic melody accompanies the vocal intertwining of Carry Ann Hearst and Michael Trent in a wonderful display of understated Americana.
Granted, it’s difficult for the average English listener to easily engage with country music.
However Shovels and Rope is as good a place to start as any. The South Carolina two-piece make music firmly rooted in the history of the genre that provides an accessible introduction to newcomers, while offering enjoyable yet familiar sound for fans of the genre.
