New Band of the Day: Vienna Ditto

Vienna Ditto’s debut EP was apparently recorded in ‘a chilly boat, a dank basement and an old temperance hall’. This doesn’t sound like the most appealing of recording environments to us, but it feels like the atmosphere of these places has seeped into every dark and moody track .

You can almost picture the old and sober ghosts of the temperance hall grooving to the old-timey sound of single 'Liar Liar' – until, that is, it suddenly mutates into a beat-driven electro freaky-circu  s tune.

EP track The Undefeated sounds, as Radio 1’s Huw Stephens put it (better than I could), like ‘Portishead doing a Tarantino soundtrack’.

The track has the same kind of languid-but-edgy swamp-blues feel that Timber Timbre (www.myspace.com/timbertimbre#!) have been quietly producing for the past eight years.

Hatty Taylor’s vocals on the beautifully understated 'Whatever Comes My Way' are deadly quiet, in calm-before-the-storm kind of way - as on Little Fingers, which buzzes with atmospheric electro crackle.
